Alliance for Rural Electrification starts hydro campaign

In January 2014 ARE kicked off its six-month Small Hydropower Campaign. The Campaign aims to underline the enormous potential of small hydropower (SHP) worldwide, and particularly in Latin America.
The starting point of the Campaign is a position paper containing an SHP technology overview, the rationale and potential of SHP, the challenges, opportunities and public sector support, several case studies and recommendations for decision makers.

The Campaign is steered by the ARE SHP Task Force, which includes a wide variety of energy stakeholders such as the International Center on Small Hydro Power (ICSHP), the European Small Hydropower Association (ESHA), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE), Innovation Energie Développement (IED), Smart Hydro Power, INSHP, DEECC Consulting, Universidad Autónoma de Occidente, CERPCH, Unicamp School of Technology and APEMEC.

In the light of the Campaign ARE has also collaborated with the Berkeley Rural Energy Group (BREG) to provide detailed analysis of the players and business opportunities in the off – grid sector of Peru, Colombia and Bolivia. Please get in touch with ARE should you be interested.

ARE and its partners are currently investigating opportunities to maximise the impact of the Campaign. Upcoming campaign highlights include the upcoming ASIA 2014 conference (11-13 March) and the International Off-grid Renewables Energy Conference and Exhibition (16-17 June).
