Hydel plant brings electricity to remote Indian village in Leh

Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Union Minister for New & Renewable Energy today (2 September 2009) inaugurated a 30 KW micro hydel plant at village Udmaroo in Nubra block of Leh district.
Shri Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Shri Chering Dorjay, Chief Executive Councillor, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Shri Deepak Gupta, Secretary, MNRE and Shri S.S.Kapur, Chief Secretary, Government of J&K graced the occasion.

The village has about 90 households who had to use costly diesel generator sets to get access to electricity. With setting up of the micro hydel plant, the villagers are able to not only save money but also generate employment opportunities. They can now access basic services like electricity in the evenings and income generation activities through installation of end-use machines like flourmill, oil expeller and multi-purpose carpentry machine operated by the Micro Hydro Electrical Power Unit.

The Minister and others guests also held meetings with LAHDC members, senior officials of Army and ITBP at Leh. They discussed to deployment of large scale solar energy equipment and micro hydel units to replace diesel and kerosene in civil, army and para-millitary establishments.
